Grow rooms are important for a variety of reasons. Not only is it an opportunity to grow a plant under controlled conditions, but one might not have an alternative to indoor growing. Similar to growing outdoors, interior farming is a science. Keeping your conditions clean and clear can make or break your plants.

Why keep your grow room clean?

Growing your plants indoors can bring on problems you wouldn’t typically think of. However, each of these issues can be combated by keeping your grow room clean.

The first reason, and most important reason, to maintain a clean grow room is to prevent diseases and pests. Dirty spaces are breeding grounds for fungi, bacteria, and other plant diseases. Along with plant diseases comes insects. All of these things can have huge impacts on the productivity of your plant. In some instances, it can even completely destroy them.

That said, the next reason to keep your grow room clean is to help improve the health of your plants. This, in turn, will result in a higher yield. The time spent growing is repaid with what the plant ultimately yields (learn how to start growing cannabis here!). If the plant doesn’t yield anything, the time put towards tending to it is wasted.

Finally, by keeping your grow room clean, you are not only keeping your grow safe but also yourself. The opportunities for tripping, equipment falling, slipping, and fires can all be lessened with regular sanitation.

By taking easy steps and maintaining a clean grow room, you can reduce the risk of diseases and pests and improve the health of your plants.

How to keep your grow room clean?

So, keeping one’s grow room clean and tidy is essential to an overall good grow room, but what steps should be taken to keep it clean?

    1. Make sure to keep yourself clean

To start, identify and put together a cleanliness routine and follow it. Your routine should include: ensuring you are wearing clean clothing or materials, washing your hands thoroughly, and pulling back or covering loose hair. By doing so, you can be sure that your clothing did not bring in any unwanted bugs, pollen or other contaminants.

For example, if you were visiting a friend’s grow room and the room was infested with powdery mildew, thrips or something else when you return home and go into your grow room, the chance of transferring some of these unwanted materials is VERY HIGH. Therefore, when you get home, change your clothes and then go tend to your plants. This way you can be sure you are not unknowingly contaminating your plants.

    2. Organize your supplies.

Make sure to give everything its own dedicated space. By keeping things tidy, as opposed to clustered together, you can avoid major spillages or mismanagement of equipment. Keep things together. For example, it makes sense to keep your pots, buckets, shears, and gloves together, your nutrients in a separate area, and cleaning supplies in yet a different area. Not only will this help keep your space clean and tidy, but you’ll be able to easily find what you’re looking for when you need it!

    3. Unclutter your floor space and keep it clear.

Take tiny steps to ensure it remains clear. This can be done by immediately cleaning up spills, keeping cords/electrical equipment away from liquids and wrapped up, and that the floor isn’t just used as storage. When you use the floor as a storage area, you open yourself up to even more chances of contamination.

    4. Neatly arrange your plants.

Not only does this allow for air circulation, but it also avoids humidity build up. Spaced plants get even amounts of light from lamps. Spacing your plants also makes it easier to spot and clean up runoff, other spills, and dead plant matter (which is a breeding ground for diseases).

    5. Do regular equipment maintenance.

By dusting lights, fans, extractors, and carbon filters you can keep everything in tip-top shape. As you dust, also make sure your plants are getting the best quality of water. If using a large drum to hold your water, empty it once in a while, so it can get a good scrubbing. Additionally, any humidifiers or air conditioning units that you may be using should be cleaned and maintained properly to ensure the environment in your room remains pristine.

Tip: To help remember what you’ve done (or what you need to do) invest in a calendar.

  1. Clean up when you are done.

Nothing is easier than just cleaning up what you recently used. This is a practice that is not only easy to incorporate into your schedule, but it can cut time in the future. By doing so, you can ensure no messes pile up. Simply do a little each day to ensure your room is always as clean as it can be, we promise you’ll be happy you did.

A clean grow room decreases the likelihood of diseases, decreases the opportunities for insects, and increases the growth potential of your plants. You can get more comprehensive with your cleaning, but adopting a bare minimum cleaning process and consistently sanitizing your grow room is a vital first step to the success of your plants.
