Amendments

Before we are ready to grow our plants, first we must increase the nutrient value of our soil. This is where Soil Amendments are utilized to fulfill specific needs. For example, depending upon which plants you are intending to grow, you may require a soil that is more acid or more alkaline. Some plants may have heavier nitrogen needs, or others may be particularly susceptible to bacterial infection. With the addition of specific soil amendments such as alfalfa meal (increases nitrogen) or crustacean meal (high levels of chitin, which stimulates the growth of beneficial microbes), some of these problems can be avoided. Additionally, other soil amendments such as insect frass and earthworm castings are recognized by generations of gardeners as two of the most nutrient-rich forms of compost available.
