As mentioned in our post detailing the differences between THC and CBD, CBD – which is the common abbreviation for cannabidiol, one of many cannabinoids, or compounds, present in the cannabis plant – is by no means a new herbal remedy. Cannabis, including cannabidiol, has been used for centuries, by thousands of traditional medicine practitioners and patients around the globe, to treat a wide range of ailments.
You are probably most familiar with accounts of people successfully using CBD to help relieve some of the effects of anxiety and depression. But did you know that CBD has also shown promise in the alleviation of both acute and chronic pain and inflammation, appetite regulation, and insomnia? Recent studies have shown CBD may also help mitigate the effects of some more serious conditions. These include epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, inflammatory bowel disease, and even, in some cases, cancer.
Many of the ways in which CBD works are not yet fully understood. This is due to hemp plant research being prohibited in the United States until Section 7606 of the Agricultural Act of 2014. Still, this piece of legislation only allowed for industrial hemp farms and related market research under federal law. More extensive hemp farming and research were not explicitly allowed according to federal law until the Hemp Farming Act of 2018. In the time since many scientists and members of the medical community have become focused on acquiring a better understanding of cannabidiol and the many ways in which this seemingly-magical substance has come to improve quality of life for so many patients.
Understanding CBD Dosing
Because existing research into the specific mechanisms of action regarding CBD is limited, we have guidelines regarding recommended use, but ultimately each individual will have to go through a bit of trial and error in order to determine the best dosage and form of CBD for them. In addition to potency, there are many options for how to administer CBD, and different delivery methods may be preferred for different ailments. For example, broad-spectrum capsules or full-spectrum oil taken orally may be preferred for treating neurological conditions. On the other hand, topical creams may be preferred for localized pain. Many people living with chronic conditions have also found the most relief by using a combination of oral and topical CBD products on a consistent basis. CBD products come in a wide range of dosage options. Most oral formulations range in strength from just a few milligrams per serving, all the way up to 100 mg per dose, and higher. How much CBD is right for me?
Not only will CBD affect each person individually, but it is important to make a note of how exactly CBD works within the body. Cannabidiol is a naturally occurring part of our internal endocannabinoid system. If we are deficient in one or more of your endocannabinoids, taking a broad or full-spectrum CBD can result in a marked improvement right away. On the other hand, if you already have a healthy internal endocannabinoid system with no deficiencies, introducing CBD may not result in noticeable effects right away.
Think of using CBD products similarly to taking vitamin supplements. If you are suffering from a Vitamin B deficiency, for example, taking even a low-dose supplement may immediately lead to increased energy. However, if you already have the recommended amount of Vitamin B in your body, you may not notice an improvement right away. Because each of our bodies absorb and metabolize substances differently, your body could require a larger dose or a longer period of time (allowing for a sufficient amount of the CBD to accumulate in your body) before achieving desired results. This is why it is important to always start with a low dose of CBD. However, you should keep in mind that you will likely need to adjust this dosage as you continue your CBD journey and begin to bring your body back into balance internally.
The general guidelines for beginning a new CBD routine are as follows – but keep in mind, these are only recommendations. You will likely need to modify the dosage based upon your own desired outcome and individual response. Also remember that since CBD is available via multiple different methods of administration, you may not have the same response to every type of product. Additionally, you may achieve the best results from a variety or combination of products with different dosages.
REMEMBER! These are only guidelines! Expect to make adjustments based upon your own individual response and desired outcomes. Also note that these guidelines refer to the amount of PURE CBD, not the total dosage amount of oral CBD (or topical) product to use. Your product of choice should note on the packaging the amount of CBD that is present per serving.
When beginning a new CBD regimen, or adding a new type of CBD product to your existing routine, it is recommended to begin with 2mg per serving.
